About the play

Dreaming
Story by Howard Craft, script by JaMeeka Holloway and Torry Bend

Dreaming follows Malachi and Bob– two men deeply affected by Winsor McCay’s comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland. In a world where comic book characters live side by side with real people, Malachi Washington, a gifted portrait artist, works to free comics cast in racist and stereotyped bodies. Bob McCay, the son of Winsor McCay, and once himself Little Nemo, seeks to revive the old comic strip at the wake of his father’s death. What follows is a compelling story of reckoning, healing, and examining the racist legacy of comics and animation. The show will tour at La Mama Experimental Theater Company in New York, and the International Puppet Festival in Chicago.

This is a story centering the experience of Black and Indigenous People of Color. It is written by BIPOC and seeks to highlight BIPOC artistry and talent. For that reason, though this is an open casting call, preference will be given to BIPOC performers.
