Tony Award-winner Victoria Clark maintains a remarkable career as actor, teacher, and director. She mentors actors and singers from every generation in vocal technique, acting, and musical theater interpretation while at the same time, inspiring audiences through her own performances as an actor in every medium.
A native Texan, Ms. Clark graduated from The Hockaday School in 1978, and then graduated Cum Laude from Yale University in 1982 with a degree in music. Her passion for stage directing led her to the graduate musical theater writing program at New York University where she worked with composers and writers shaping new works.
Her acting career began when a prominent casting director saw her present material at New York University and cast her in the original Broadway production of Sunday in the Park with George. Since then, she has co-starred in twelve Broadway shows, and countless off-Broadway and regional productions. Victoria received the 2005 Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for her luminous portrayal of Margaret Johnson in The Light in the Piazza, and received three additional Tony nominations for her work in Sister Act, Cinderella, and Gigi.
Her films include Wanderland, The Happening, Cradle Will Rock, Tickling Leo, Harvest, Main Street, and Archaeology of a Woman. Televisions credits include The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair (Fall 2018) The Good Wife, Homeland, Mercy, Law and Order, and Law and Order SVU.
Clark has directed Newton’s Cradle (New York Musical Theater Festival, Best Musical & Best Director), The Trouble With Doug (Fredericia Theater in Denmark), Hansel and Gretl and Heidi and Günther (Village Theater Festival of New Musicals), Mary Jo Shen’s Paper Piano. She has also directed for the Philadelphia Opera Theater, Texas Opera Theater, Chautauqua Opera and the 92nd Street Y. She recently directed the short film For Me & My Gal for NikoFrank Productions.
Ms. Clark has taught in numerous universities and conservatories world-wide including Yale University and Juilliard. In 2014-2015, she was the Artist-In-Residence for Pace University in New York, where she directed The Light in the Piazza. She is currently creating a solo autobiographical play. Her solo debut CD Fifteen Seconds of Grace is available through PS Classics. She serves on the Board of Trustees for the Kurt Weill Foundation and New York City Center. She resides in Manhattan with her husband Tom Reidy, and their Golden Retriever, Ollie.
For Professor Brad Rogers' Musical Theater Workshop class this fall, Victoria Clark will be directing undergraduates in Love Life, a rare gem created by Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner in 1948. Students involved will work on acting, singing, and dancing techniques that are relevant to every kind of musical theater performance and there will be a public performance in the Rubenstein Arts Center on December 7.
