Tony Award-winning Broadway star Victoria Clark directed a workshop presentation of Love Life, a vaudeville in two acts with music and lyrics by Kurt Weill and Alan Jay Lerner. Staged very simply, the witty and innovative musical used vaudeville-style side acts to comment on the main story of the Cooper family’s turbulent (and magically non-aging) progression through 150 years of American history. Students in Professor Bradley Rogers’ Musical Theater Workshop class rehearsed intensively over the semester with artist-in-residence Clark and guest choreographer Sara Brians, bringing life to Clark's fresh vision of this rarely-performed gem.
The cast included Duke student Rebekah Wellons as Mrs. Cooper and New York actor Daniel Schwait as Mr. Cooper, with Huck Borden and Isabella Grace Houston as their children.
Produced by Duke Theater Studies with support from the office of the Vice Provost for the Arts - Duke Arts and by special arrangement with the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music, Inc., and the Alan Jay Lerner Testamentary Trust.
"Love Life is the most intelligent and adult musical yet offered on the American stage . . . a sheer delight . . . Alan Jay Lerner's book and lyrics represent a sharp advance over any work he has yet done for the theater. Kurt Weill has written a knowing and a glowing score."
