AUDITIONS for Fall 2017 Mainstage RESCHEDULED

Tuesday, April 11, 2017

Theater Studies is pleased to announce the Fall 2017 mainstage will be Caryl Churchill’s VINEGAR TOM, directed by Dr. Jules Odendahl-James.  Auditions will be scheduled for the first week of classes in the fall.  There will be sides available, but you are welcome to present the monologue of your choice.  If you want to be notified of the audition date or if you are interested in working on the show in a design/tech capacity, please email theater@duke.edu.

Dr. Odendahl-James will be auditioning to build an ensemble of 9 individuals of all body types, gender identifications, races and ethnicities.

The Theater Studies mainstage presentation each semester is also a class, THEATRST 350, that students in the cast and crew take for academic credit as they delve into the world of the show with the faculty director, designer, and professional guest artists. Students cast or working on design/tech will receive permission numbers to add THEATRST 350 (ALP, R, CCI).

Vinegar Tom draws links across money, power, gender, and sexuality that keep women and anyone feminine identified strictly controlled under pain of public sanction, imprisonment, or death. The story of how the worlds of two peasant women and an upper-class lady collide as they refuse to conform to societal expectations and pay different prices for their disobedience. 21 scenes are punctuated by songs and music, which propel us from the 16th to the 20th to the 21st century as we see just how much things have changed even as they remain the same.
